Your Google account storage is full because Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos all draw from one shared pool, which is up to 15 GB per account according to Google's own help page. Photos backed up after June 1, 2021, every email including Spam and Trash, and every file in Drive all count, so the service that warns you is often not the one filling the space.

Here is the everyday version. You open Gmail, see a storage warning, and think: "I barely keep any email." You may be right. But your phone has been quietly backing up every photo and video to Google Photos for years, and those backups come out of the same pool as your inbox. Gmail is just where you noticed.

What counts toward the shared quota?

Google's page on how your Google storage works lists these as using your space:

  • Google Photos backups in Original quality.
  • Storage saver (formerly "High quality") and Express quality backups made after June 1, 2021.
  • Gmail messages and attachments, including the Spam and Trash folders.
  • Files in Google Drive, including PDFs, images and videos.
  • Hidden app data, background system files, and items sitting in Drive's Trash.

The Spam and Trash detail answers a common puzzle. If you have "few emails" but a full account, check those two folders, because deleted and junk mail still counts until it is gone. If you use filters to clear out mail automatically, our guide on Gmail filter help you can trust covers setting them up; just remember that anything sent to Trash still counts while it sits there.

What doesn't count?

The list is short:

  • Photos and videos backed up in High or Express quality before June 1, 2021. Both the Google One help page and the Google Photos help page say these are exempt.
  • Files someone else shared with you. Files in shared folders use only the original owner's quota, never the recipient's, per Google. If a colleague shares a 2 GB video folder with you, it counts against their storage, not yours.

Google's Photos help page also mentions unlimited storage for photos and videos backed up from a Pixel 5 or earlier. If you own one of those phones, read that page for the exact terms before relying on it.

You may see claims that Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files don't count.

Why does my account say 5 GB instead of 15 GB?

If you created your account recently, you may have been given less. 9to5Google reported on May 14, 2026 that some new accounts see a setup prompt reading "Your account includes 5 GB of storage." The prompt offers two choices: add a phone number to unlock 15 GB at no cost, or keep 5 GB. Google says the phone number ensures the storage is "added only once per person."

Google's support wording also changed from "15 GB of cloud storage at no charge" to "up to 15 GB," per 9to5Google. Gadget Hacks and Gizchina, both citing 9to5Google, trace that wording change to around March 18, 2026.

How widespread is it? Reports differ:

That confirmation is secondhand.

  • 9to5Google's headline frames it more broadly, saying accounts no longer get 15GB.
  • Existing accounts appear unaffected. PiunikaWeb checked an existing account with no phone number and it still showed 15 GB, and Gizchina says the cap applies only to newly created accounts.

If your new account shows 5 GB, adding a phone number at setup is the route the prompt itself offers to 15 GB.

Why does Drive for desktop show less than Google says I'm using?

Drive for desktop uses placeholder files, so the size of the folder on your computer does not reflect what you use in the cloud, according to Google. It also doesn't show hidden app data, background system files, or items left in Drive's Trash, all of which count. The number on Google's storage page is the one that matters.

What happens when Google storage is full?

For Photos, the rules are spelled out. Per Google's Photos help page:

  • You can't save new photos and videos once you run out of space.
  • If you stay over your limit, or are inactive in Photos, for 2 years, your photos and videos might be deleted.

Because the pool is shared, filling it with photos can affect your email too. Mailsweeper says a full account from Photos can stop Gmail sending or receiving mail. That follows from the shared quota, but it comes from a third-party blog, not a Google page.

How do I see which service is eating my storage?

In the Google Photos app, tap Manage storage. Google says this opens the Google One storage manager. A Google Drive community guide adds that the storage manager can estimate how long your remaining space will last and suggests things to review, such as blurry photos, screenshots and large videos. Those three categories are usually the quickest wins.

If you need more than the free allowance, Google offers extra storage through a Google One membership "where available," and occasional promotions can add more. Check Google One for current plans and prices, since this article doesn't have verified figures.

What to do differently now

Stop judging your storage by whichever app complained. The route to the storage manager that Google's help pages confirm is the one above: open the Google Photos app and tap Manage storage, which opens the Google One storage manager. This article could not verify the exact menus for reaching the storage manager from Gmail or Drive, or the exact buttons for emptying Gmail's Spam and Trash and Drive's Trash, so it doesn't give them rather than guess. What is confirmed is that all three still count until they are emptied, so they are worth clearing. Remember that your old pre-June 2021 High quality photos are free, but everything backed up since then is not, so a phone that backs up every video is the most likely reason you're full. And if you're setting up a new account, take the phone-number option if you see the 5 GB prompt, or you'll start with a third of the space.

Common questions

Does Google Photos count toward Google Drive storage?

Yes. Photos, Gmail and Drive share one quota. Original quality backups and Storage saver or Express quality backups made after June 1, 2021 all count.

Do Spam and Trash count toward Gmail storage?

Yes. Google's help page says Gmail messages and attachments count, including those in Spam and Trash.

Do files shared with me use my storage?

No. Files in shared folders use only the original owner's quota, according to Google.

Why does my new Google account only have 5 GB?

Some new accounts see a setup prompt offering 15 GB if you add a phone number, or 5 GB if you don't. Reports describe it as a test in select regions, and existing accounts appear unaffected.

Can Google delete my photos if storage stays full?

Google's Photos help page says that if you stay over your limit, or are inactive in Photos, for 2 years, your photos and videos might be deleted.
