How to Use Firefly Boards and Generative Extend in Premiere Pro 26.2

Two seconds of missing footage used to mean a reshoot, a pan-and-scan cheat, or a frozen frame nobody buys. In Premiere Pro 26.2, that gap closes with a click and drag, and the b-roll you wish you had shot can be generated, sent into your project, and color-graded without ever leaving Adobe's tools. This guide walks through the full Adobe Firefly video generation Premiere Pro workflow: storyboarding shots in Firefly Boards, selecting the right model for the job, dropping the assets into a sequence, and using Generative Extend to rescue clips that ended a beat too soon.

What this workflow actually gets you

By the end of this tutorial you will be able to generate a 4 to 15-second b-roll shot from a text prompt or reference image, push it directly into an open Premiere Pro project without a manual download, and extend any underlying clip by up to two seconds of new video or ten seconds of new audio. According to Adobe's April 15, 2026 announcement, the Generative Extend feature in Premiere Pro uses Adobe Firefly generative AI to extend video clips by up to two seconds and audio clips by up to 10 seconds. The b-roll side of the workflow lives in Firefly Boards, which Adobe positions as the storyboard-to-asset bridge into the editor.

The whole pipeline runs in the cloud. As digen.ai notes, generation runs on Adobe's servers, so a 2018 MacBook Air handles it the same as a Threadripper tower. What you pay for is plan eligibility, not silicon.

Before you start: plan, region, and source media

A few prerequisites trip people up. Generative Extend is a paid Firefly feature gated by both license type and geography. According to Adobe's Help documentation, Generative Extend is powered by Adobe Firefly, which isn't available in Russia, Belarus, and China, and K-12 and educational accounts may have limited or no access, while some enterprise users with a CCE v3 license don't have Firefly services enabled and cannot access Generative Extend.

For the unlimited tier, the rules shifted in early 2026. As digen.ai reported, Adobe ran a free unlimited generation window through March 16, 2026, after which unlimited access requires a qualifying Creative Cloud plan. Check your subscription before you build a project around generated shots.

Your source clip also has to qualify. Per Adobe's Generative Extend overview, source clips can be 12-60 fps but extensions above 30 fps are generated at 30 fps, source clips can be 8-bit, 10-bit, or 16-bit but extensions are generated in 8-bit, and source clips can be SDR or HDR but extensions are generated in SDR. If you are cutting HDR for a streaming deliverable, the extended frames will not match. Plan for that.

Phase 1: Storyboard the shot in Firefly Boards

Firefly Boards is where the b-roll thinking happens before any frame is rendered. Open Firefly on the web, create a new Board, and lay out your shot list as cards. Each card holds a prompt, a reference image, a model choice, and aspect ratio.

The Adobe announcement describes Firefly Boards as the place where creators storyboard and generate b-roll, then push assets directly into a Premiere Pro project on desktop without manual downloading or importing. That last detail matters more than it sounds. Skipping the download-rename-import dance saves real minutes per shot once you are working at a dozen-clip scale.

Write prompts the way a DP briefs a camera operator. Specify the subject, the lens behavior, the time of day, and the lighting. "Slow dolly-in on a steaming espresso cup, soft window light from camera left, shallow depth of field, 35mm look" gives the model far more to work with than "coffee shot."

Phase 2: Pick the right model for the shot

Firefly is a multi-model platform now, and the choice between engines is the single biggest lever on output quality. According to the Adobe announcement, Kling 3.0 was added as an all-purpose AI video model focused on smart storyboarding and audio-visual sync, while Kling 3.0 Omni is the professional-grade version with per-shot duration, angle, and camera movement specification.

The practical hierarchy looks like this:

  • Ideation pass: Use a cheaper model. As Feisworld's testing notes, creators can use lower-cost models like Kling Turbo in Firefly Boards for ideation, then regenerate finals with premium models.
  • Final render for client work: Native Firefly Video. Feisworld recommends it for client work due to commercial safety, since it is trained on Adobe Stock and licensed content.
  • Cinematic shots with specific camera moves: Kling 3.0 Omni for its per-shot motion controls.
  • High-realism establishing shots: Runway Gen-4.5 or Google Veo 3.1, which Feisworld benchmarked against identical prompts alongside Kling Turbo, Pika, and native Firefly.

Resolution and length are bounded across the partner models. Per Feisworld, the partner ecosystem supports resolutions up to 1080p native (4K via upscale) with clip durations from 4 to 15 seconds per generation. Plan your edits around 4-15 second blocks. Asking for a 30-second continuous shot is not the workflow.

Camera direction inside Firefly Video

For the native model, digen.ai documents granular camera controls including pan, tilt, zoom, motion intensity, and a Motion Brush for directing movement within a specific area of the frame. The Motion Brush is the underrated one. Mask a flag in your reference image, paint a motion vector, and the model isolates that movement instead of putting the whole frame in motion. It is the closest thing in Firefly to actually directing a shot.

Phase 3: Send b-roll into Premiere Pro

Once a generation looks right on the Board, send it. The Firefly Boards-to-Premiere bridge described in Adobe's announcement drops the asset into your open Premiere Pro project without a manual import step. The clip arrives in your Project panel with Content Credentials already attached. Per digen.ai, Content Credentials metadata is attached to every Firefly-generated video, tracking how much AI was used and which models were involved. Broadcasters and brand teams who require disclosure get that audit trail for free.

If you would rather grade and trim before importing, the Firefly Video Editor itself has gained color tools. The Adobe announcement confirms the editor now includes color adjustment controls with exposure, contrast, saturation, and temperature sliders, plus one-click looks. Use them to neutralize clips before they hit your Premiere timeline so the new shots match your existing footage rather than drifting away from it.

The Quick Cut feature, also detailed in that same Adobe post, takes raw footage to a structured first cut in seconds. Treat it as a rough assembly tool, not a finished edit. It is faster than logging dailies but the cut will need work.

Phase 4: Extend a clip with Generative Extend in Premiere Pro

This is the workflow that will pay for itself the fastest. You have a clip that ends one beat short of the cut you want to make. Here is the exact sequence.

  1. Confirm the clip qualifies. Per Adobe, video clips should be at least 2 seconds long, while audio clips must have a minimum duration of at least 3 seconds.
  2. Select the Generative Extend Tool in the Toolbar. If you don't see it, open Window > Tools and enable the panel.
  3. Drag the edge of the clip outward to the length you want.
  4. Wait for the cloud render. Generative Extend will create additional frames and insert them into your sequence.
  5. The new frames are visibly labeled in the timeline so you always know where original ends and AI begins.

If the result is wrong, you have two recovery paths. Per Adobe's documentation, if you want to replace the AI-generated frames with original media, right-click on the AI-generated label and select Revert to Original. You can also double-click the segment and choose Generate Again for a fresh variation.

What it cannot do

This is where most tutorials soft-pedal and most editors get burned. The known-issues list from Adobe is worth reading before you commit to an edit. Clips with speed changes or time remapping cannot be extended; you must remove the speed adjustment, extend at 100 percent, then reapply. Multicam clips cannot be extended directly and must be flattened to the selected angle first. Generative Extend can only be applied to the beginning or end of a clip, not both, and the workaround is a blade edit in the middle so each segment gets one extension.

Dialogue and music are hard limits. Adobe states that Generative Extend cannot create or extend spoken dialog, existing dialog will be muted during extension to preserve the integrity of the original speech content, clips containing music are not eligible for extension due to the complexity of musical structures and potential copyright concerns, and only mono and stereo audio are supported. If you need a musical bed to run longer, the old Remix tool in Premiere is still the right answer. It is faster and has none of the cloud round-trip latency.

One workflow gotcha that almost nobody documents: markers on the original clip are lost after performing Generative Extend, and the workaround is to manually reapply markers after the extension completes. If you mark up your dailies before cutting, do not extend until your markers are baked into transcription notes elsewhere.

Phase 5: Grade and finish in Premiere 26.2's Color Mode

The new release ships with a dedicated grading workspace. Per the Adobe announcement, Premiere 26.2 introduces Color Mode, which entered public beta on April 15, 2026 with general availability later in the year, built with hundreds of working editors in private beta. The same release adds Object Masking with Sharp and Smooth edge modes, Film Impact-powered effects and transitions, and a searchable Sequence Index panel.

This is where AI b-roll lives or dies. Generated shots tend to drift slightly warm and slightly low-contrast against camera-original footage. Use Color Mode's tools to match exposure and skin tones, then apply Object Masking to isolate areas where the model produced soft edges. The combination of generated b-roll and a real grading pass is the difference between footage that looks like AI and footage that just looks like footage.

When to skip Firefly entirely

The non-obvious lesson from working with these tools at production scale: generated b-roll is a closer for shots you almost had, not a substitute for shots you never planned. If your edit needs three cutaways of a specific person doing a specific action, real footage will always be cheaper, faster, and more credible than three Firefly generations and a back-and-forth approval cycle. The workflow earns its keep on textures, environments, abstract motion, and the two-second extension that saves you a reshoot.
